Dumpster Rental Checklist
Follow this step-by-step checklist for a smooth rental experience. From ordering to pickup, we've got you covered.
1
Before You Order
- Determine your project type (cleanout, renovation, construction, etc.)
- Estimate the amount of debris you'll generate
- Use our size calculator to find the right dumpster size
- Check if your city requires a dumpster placement permit
- Identify the best placement location (driveway, yard, street)
- Verify truck access (about 60 feet of straight-line approach, roughly 25 feet of overhead clearance)
- Check for underground utilities if placing on grass/dirt
- Review our list of prohibited items
2
When Ordering
- Choose your dumpster size based on project needs
- Select your preferred delivery date and time window
- Ask about weight limits for your chosen size
- Confirm the rental period (7 days come standard with every rental)
- Ask about extension rates in case you need more time
- Confirm what's included in the price (delivery, pickup, weight allowance)
- Get the total price in writing, no hidden fees
- Ask about contractor/Pro Program discounts if applicable
3
Delivery Day Prep
- Clear the delivery area of vehicles, debris, and obstacles
- Place plywood boards where the dumpster will sit (protects driveway)
- Mark the exact placement spot for the driver
- Ensure gate is open if the driveway is gated
- Take a photo of the placement area (before photo)
- Keep 10 feet of clearance on each side of the drop zone
- Move any low-hanging wires, branches, or decorations
4
Loading the Dumpster
- Load heavy items in first (bottom layer)
- Break down large items to maximize space
- Flatten boxes and disassemble furniture
- Distribute weight evenly across the container
- Don't place prohibited items in the dumpster
- Don't fill above the rim, keep level with top edge
- Cut branches to 4-foot lengths for flat stacking
- Bag loose materials (leaves, insulation, small debris)
5
Pickup Day
- Do a final walk-through to grab any remaining debris
- Verify nothing extends above the container rim
- Remove any prohibited items you may have accidentally added
- Clear the area around the dumpster for truck access
- Take a photo of the loaded dumpster
- Call or go online to schedule your pickup
- Take an after photo once the dumpster is gone
- Save your receipt for records (or insurance claims)
Quick Tips
When in doubt, go one size up. It's cheaper than ordering a second dumpster
Book 2-3 days ahead for best availability and pricing
Keep concrete and heavy materials separate from general debris
Extra days run $35-$50 each beyond your included 7, so don't rush
