A
- Aggregate
- A broad category of coarse-to-fine particulate materials used in construction, including sand, gravel, crushed stone, and recycled concrete. Aggregate is extremely heavy and may require a dedicated heavy-debris dumpster with a higher weight allowance.
- Allowable Weight
- The maximum weight of debris included in your dumpster rental price, measured in tons. Exceeding the allowable weight triggers a per-ton overage fee. Each dumpster size comes with a specific weight allowance based on your location and debris type.
- Asbestos
- A naturally occurring mineral fiber once widely used in building insulation, floor tiles, roofing, and siding. Asbestos is a known carcinogen and is strictly prohibited in standard dumpsters. Removal and disposal require licensed abatement professionals and specialized containers.
B
- Base Rate
- The starting price for a dumpster rental before any additional fees such as weight overages or extended rental days. The base rate typically includes delivery, the standard rental period, pickup, and disposal up to the included weight allowance.
C
- C&D (Construction & Demolition)
- A category of waste generated by construction, renovation, and demolition activities. C&D debris includes drywall, lumber, concrete, roofing, metal, and similar materials. Many landfills and transfer stations have separate C&D disposal areas with different rates than municipal solid waste.
- Clean Fill
- Uncontaminated natural material (typically dirt, sand, gravel, or broken concrete) that can be reused as fill for grading, backfilling, or site preparation. Clean fill is often accepted at reduced or no disposal cost because it has recycling value.
- Compactor
- A mechanical device that compresses waste to reduce its volume. Compactors are commonly used by businesses, apartment complexes, and commercial properties with high waste volumes. They reduce the number of pickups needed and can lower overall waste disposal costs.
- Container
- A general term for any waste receptacle, including roll-off dumpsters, front-load dumpsters, and storage containers. In the dumpster rental industry, 'container' and 'dumpster' are often used interchangeably.
- Cubic Yard
- The standard unit of measurement for dumpster capacity. One cubic yard equals a volume of 3 feet long by 3 feet wide by 3 feet tall (27 cubic feet). A 20-yard dumpster holds 20 cubic yards of material, equivalent to roughly 6 full-size pickup truck loads.
D
- Debris
- Any waste material generated by a project, cleanup, or demolition activity. Debris can include construction materials, household items, yard waste, and industrial byproducts. The type of debris affects pricing, weight limits, and disposal options.
- Delivery Fee
- A charge for transporting the dumpster from the hauler's yard to your location. In flat-rate dumpster pricing models, the delivery fee is included in the total price. Some haulers list it as a separate line item on variable-rate quotes.
- Disposal Fee
- The cost of disposing debris at a landfill, transfer station, or recycling facility. Also called a tipping fee. Disposal fees vary by location, debris type, and weight. In flat-rate pricing, disposal up to the included weight allowance is part of the quoted price.
- Driveway Protection
- Wooden boards, plywood sheets, or rubber pads placed under a dumpster to prevent damage to driveways, sidewalks, and other paved surfaces. Most reputable haulers offer driveway protection at no extra charge upon request.
- Drop-Off
- The act of delivering and placing a dumpster at the customer's designated location. Also refers to self-haul drop-off facilities where individuals can bring waste to a transfer station or landfill in their own vehicle.
- Dry Run Fee
- A charge that applies when a delivery driver arrives at your location but cannot place the dumpster due to access issues, blocked driveways, or other obstacles. Dry run fees typically cover the driver's time and fuel for the attempted delivery. Ensuring a clear delivery area prevents this charge.
- Dumpster
- A large, open-top waste container designed for temporary use during construction, renovation, cleanout, and demolition projects. Roll-off dumpsters are delivered on a specialized truck and range from 10 to 40 cubic yards in capacity.
E
- Environmental Fee
- A surcharge applied by some haulers to cover the cost of environmental compliance, including landfill monitoring, leachate treatment, and groundwater protection. Reputable flat-rate providers include this cost in the quoted price rather than listing it as a separate fee.
F
- Flat-Rate Pricing
- A pricing model in which one all-inclusive price covers delivery, rental period, pickup, and disposal up to the included weight allowance. Flat-rate pricing eliminates surprise fees and makes budgeting straightforward. This is the pricing model used by Ultimate Dumpsters.
- Front-Load
- A type of commercial dumpster (typically 2 to 8 cubic yards) that is emptied by a front-loading garbage truck using mechanical arms. Front-load dumpsters are used for ongoing waste collection at businesses, apartment buildings, and commercial properties, as opposed to temporary roll-off containers.
H
- Haul-Off
- The process of picking up a loaded dumpster from a customer's location and transporting it to a disposal facility. Also used colloquially to describe junk removal services where a crew loads and hauls away debris in a single visit.
- Hazardous Waste
- Waste that poses a substantial threat to human health or the environment. Hazardous waste includes chemicals, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, batteries, medical waste, and asbestos. It is strictly prohibited in standard dumpsters and must be handled by licensed hazardous waste disposal companies.
- Hook-Lift
- A type of truck that loads and unloads dumpsters using a hydraulic hook arm rather than a cable winch. Hook-lift systems are common for larger containers (20 to 40 yards) and allow for faster loading and unloading than traditional cable systems.
L
- Landfill
- A managed disposal site where waste is deposited, compacted, and covered with soil in a controlled environment. Modern landfills are engineered with liners, leachate collection systems, and gas capture to minimize environmental impact. Disposal fees (tipping fees) at landfills are a major component of dumpster rental pricing.
- Load-and-Go
- A service model where a dumpster is delivered, you load it, and it is picked up the same day. Load-and-go is ideal for projects where all debris is ready at once, such as a completed roof tear-off or pre-staged cleanout. Same-day turnaround minimizes how long the dumpster sits on site.
M
- Mixed Debris
- A load containing more than one type of waste material, for example, a mix of construction lumber, drywall, and household items. Mixed debris loads are typically disposed of at a landfill, whereas single-material loads may qualify for cheaper recycling rates.
- MSW (Municipal Solid Waste)
- Everyday waste generated by households, businesses, and institutions, commonly known as trash or garbage. MSW includes food waste, paper, plastics, textiles, and miscellaneous household items. It is distinguished from construction and demolition debris, hazardous waste, and industrial waste.
O
- Overweight Fee
- An additional charge applied when the total weight of debris in your dumpster exceeds the included weight allowance. Overweight fees are calculated on a per-ton basis and vary by market. To avoid this fee, choose the right size, be aware of heavy materials, and do not exceed the stated weight limit.
- Overfill
- When debris extends above the top edge of the dumpster walls. Overfilled containers cannot be legally or safely transported on public roads. If a dumpster is overfilled, the customer must level the load before pickup, or an overfill fee may apply for the additional handling required.
P
- Permit
- A municipal authorization required when a dumpster is placed on public property such as a street, sidewalk, or right of way. Permit requirements, fees, and durations vary by city. Dumpsters placed on private property (driveways, parking lots) typically do not require a permit.
- Pick-Up
- The scheduled removal of a loaded dumpster from your location. After you notify us that you are done loading, pickup is typically completed within 24 to 48 hours. The container is then transported to a disposal, recycling, or transfer facility.
- Prohibited Items
- Materials that cannot legally or safely be disposed of in a standard dumpster. Common prohibited items include hazardous waste, chemicals, paint, batteries, tires, medical waste, asbestos, and refrigerants. Disposing of prohibited items can result in fines and additional cleanup fees.
R
- Rear-Load
- A type of commercial waste container that is emptied by a rear-loading garbage truck. Rear-load dumpsters are smaller (typically 2 to 6 cubic yards) and common for businesses and multi-family housing in areas where front-load trucks cannot maneuver easily.
- Recycling
- The process of converting waste materials into reusable products. Common recyclable dumpster materials include clean concrete, scrap metal, cardboard, clean wood, and asphalt shingles. Recycling-friendly loads can qualify for lower disposal rates since they avoid landfill tipping fees.
- Rental Period
- The number of days included in your dumpster rental price. The standard rental period is typically 7 days. Extensions are available at a daily rate. There is no penalty for early pickup if you finish before the rental period expires.
- Roll-Off
- A type of open-top dumpster that is delivered and picked up using a specialized roll-off truck. Roll-off containers range from 10 to 40 cubic yards and are designed for temporary use during construction, renovation, and cleanup projects. The name comes from the way the container rolls off the back of the truck during delivery.
- ROW (Right of Way)
- The strip of public land between the road and private property, including sidewalks, curbs, and utility easements. Placing a dumpster in the right of way typically requires a municipal permit. ROW regulations vary by jurisdiction and may dictate placement requirements and time limits.

- Scrap
- Recyclable metal and other materials that have residual value. Scrap metals (steel, copper, aluminum) recovered from dumpster loads are sorted and sent to metal recyclers. In some cases, scrap value offsets disposal costs and may reduce your overall rental price.
- Swap-Out
- The process of picking up a full dumpster and replacing it with an empty one at the same location. Swap-outs are common on construction sites and large projects that generate more debris than a single container can hold. Scheduling swap-outs in advance keeps your project on track without interruption.
T
- Tipping Fee
- The per-ton charge assessed by a landfill, transfer station, or recycling facility when waste is deposited (or 'tipped') for disposal. Tipping fees are a primary driver of dumpster rental pricing and vary widely by region, from $30 per ton in some rural areas to over $100 per ton in major metros.
- Transfer Station
- A facility where waste is temporarily held before being transported to a landfill or recycling center. Transfer stations allow smaller collection trucks to consolidate loads into larger, long-haul vehicles, improving efficiency. Many municipalities operate transfer stations as part of their waste management infrastructure.
W
- Walk-In
- A hinged door on the back or side of a roll-off dumpster that swings open to allow ground-level access. The walk-in door makes it easy to roll wheelbarrows or walk heavy items directly into the container without lifting them over the top edge. Always close and latch the door before scheduling pickup.
- Weight Limit
- The maximum weight of debris included in your rental price, measured in tons. Weight limits are set based on the dumpster size, local road regulations, and the hauler's truck capacity. Exceeding the weight limit results in a per-ton overage fee. Heavy materials like concrete, dirt, and roofing require careful weight planning.
Y
- Yard (Cubic)
- Short for cubic yard, the standard measurement of dumpster volume. One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet (3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft), roughly the size of a standard kitchen appliance. When someone refers to a '20-yard dumpster,' they mean a container that holds 20 cubic yards of material.
