A roll-off delivery truck is a large vehicle (typically 30 to 40 feet long) that needs clear, straight access to your drop-off location. The driver uses a hydraulic system to tilt the truck bed and slide the container off the back. This process requires adequate ground clearance, overhead space, and a firm surface.
If the driver arrives and cannot safely place the dumpster due to obstructions, tight turns, low branches, or blocked access, you may face a rescheduled delivery or a dry run fee. Spending 20 to 30 minutes preparing your site before delivery day eliminates these issues and ensures the container is placed exactly where you want it. Measure the length and width of your intended placement area. Ensure it accommodates the dumpster dimensions plus 2 to 3 feet of clearance on each side for loading access.

Plan for the dumpster footprint plus clearance space. A 10-yard dumpster is roughly 12 feet long and 8 feet wide. A 20 or 30-yard container is about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide. You will also need approximately 60 feet of straight clearance for the truck to back in, and 23 feet of overhead clearance for tree branches and power lines.
Dumpsters are heavy, especially when loaded. While damage is uncommon on concrete driveways in good condition, there is a risk of surface scratches or minor cracking on asphalt, pavers, or older concrete. Placing plywood sheets under the container significantly reduces this risk and is our recommended best practice.
Yes, but there are considerations. Soft ground may cause the container to sink or shift, especially after rain. Place thick plywood or boards under the dumpster to distribute the weight. Be aware that the truck also needs a firm surface to operate on. Your lawn will likely need repair after the rental period.
Slight slopes are usually fine; the driver can place blocks or wedges to stabilize the container. Steep slopes may not be suitable for safe placement. Contact your provider in advance if your driveway has a significant incline so they can assess whether it is safe and recommend the best positioning.
Many homeowner associations have rules about dumpster placement, rental duration, and even container colors. Check your HOA guidelines before booking. Some HOAs require advance written approval. Failing to notify them can result in fines from the association, not the dumpster company.
The roll-off truck lifts the container hydraulically, requiring at least 23 feet of vertical clearance. If power lines cross your driveway at a lower height, the driver may not be able to safely deliver to that location. In this case, consider an alternative placement spot or contact your utility company about temporary line adjustments.
