Virginia, City by City: Three Price Markets From Virginia Beach to Roanoke, the Street Permits Every City Runs Its Own Way, and the Driveway Rule Chesapeake Adds

Virginia runs on three price markets on our live pages: most of the state, from Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Norfolk to Northern Virginia, Charlottesville and Staunton; Winchester; and the Roanoke Valley. A 10 yard starts at $425 in most of the state, with delivery, pickup, disposal, taxes and 7 days built in. What changes from city to city is the street permit, and in Chesapeake even the driveway has a time limit. This is the honest, city by city rundown, with the real prices from our live pages.

A plain green 20 yard roll off dumpster on the concrete driveway of a white two story coastal Virginia Beach home with a wide front porch and gray shutters, filled with old laminate flooring, carpet rolls, drywall and a water damaged vanity, with live oaks and crepe myrtles and a contractor carrying a roll of old carpet toward it.
The Hampton Roads interior redo: a 20 yard on the driveway, where Virginia Beach needs no city permit. In Chesapeake, the same driveway box is limited to 16 days. THE DAILY HAUL

How much does a dumpster cost in Virginia?

Start with the price, because most of Virginia shares one ladder. On our dumpster rental pages, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton, Alexandria, Fairfax, Reston, Fredericksburg, Charlottesville, Staunton and Lynchburg all run a 10 yard at $425 to $625, a 15 yard at $495 to $695, a 20 yard at $575 to $775, a 30 yard at $695 to $895 and a 40 yard at $795 to $995. Winchester starts at $495, and Roanoke and Blacksburg start at $550. Every price covers delivery, pickup, disposal, taxes and 7 days, and extra days are $40 each.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Virginia Beach?

Virginia Beach keeps it to one desk. A Virginia Beach dumpster rental on your own driveway needs no city permit. Anything placed in a city owned right of way or easement needs a right of way permit from Permits and Inspections, applied for online, and the city's application lists a dumpster as its own request type. Tell us the spot, and we confirm what your street needs before the truck rolls.

Why does Chesapeake limit dumpsters even on a driveway?

Chesapeake is the one Virginia city that limits the driveway too. In a Chesapeake dumpster rental, the city counts a roll-off on a private residential lot as a portable storage container: it can stay no more than 16 consecutive days and 16 days a year, the city has to be notified, and the zoning administrator can extend it for a damaged home with a valid building permit. A box in the street is a separate permit, and the city's fee schedule lists a dumpster in the right of way at $50. Plan a Chesapeake remodel so the box comes and goes inside 16 days.

What does Norfolk require?

Norfolk only allows the street when there is no other choice. A Norfolk dumpster rental belongs on private property; a street spot is allowed only when it can't fit there, under the city's general use permit for a temporary dumpster in the right of way. The city's permit desk asks for a call to the right of way inspector at least 48 hours before delivery so No Stopping signs go up, and has charged a $25 application fee on right of way permits since July 1, 2026. Hampton and the rest of Hampton Roads price the same as Norfolk.

What about Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax?

Northern Virginia is the strictest corner. In Arlington, the county's moving van and container permit covers roll-off dumpsters and is filed online at least 5 business days ahead, with nothing within 20 feet of a corner. An Alexandria dumpster rental in the street needs a city transportation and environmental services permit, also 5 business days ahead, with a sketch, flashing barricades, insurance and a hauler sticker. In Fairfax, most roads belong to the state, and the county points anyone who wants a spot in the road to VDOT, whose land use permit covers any temporary use of the right of way. In Northern Virginia, the driveway is the easy answer.

What is the price in Roanoke, Winchester and the Shenandoah Valley?

West of the Blue Ridge the price moves. A Roanoke dumpster rental starts at $550 for a 10 yard, and the city's dumpster and container permit for a street spot is filed by the dumpster company at least 10 days ahead, with $1 million in liability insurance and a 30 day limit. Winchester starts at $495. Staunton, Charlottesville and Lynchburg stay on the statewide $425 ladder.

What can't go in a dumpster in Virginia?

A few things never ride in a Virginia dumpster. Throwing away a used car or truck battery is against state law, with a fine of up to $50 per battery; it goes back to a battery retailer or recycler. Whole tires have to be split or shredded before a landfill takes them, so they stay out of the box. Under the state's construction and debris landfill rules, lumber, sheetrock, brick, shingles, concrete and paving are construction waste, while paint, solvents, liquids, compressed gas cylinders, asbestos and household garbage are not. Tell us what is going in, and concrete or brick goes in its own heavy load box.

How much weight is included, and what is the fastest way to a real price?

The weight rules hold everywhere. The allowance is built in, about 1 ton on a 10 yard up to 4 tons on a 40, and anything over is billed at $170 a ton from the scale ticket on our Virginia pages. Roofing shingles are regular construction debris, sized by the squares and the layers. Commercial jobs carry one more rule: the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry requires 20 days notice for asbestos work of 10 feet or more and 10 working days notice for most demolitions; a single private home is generally exempt. For storm timing in Hampton Roads, the National Weather Service in Wakefield covers the forecasts. The fastest way to the real number is to price your exact ZIP, or start from the Virginia coverage hub and pick your city, and the free size calculator matches the box to the job. “We like to use private property as much as possible; street permits vary city by city.”

FROM THE DESK
The cost people never see is the landfill. When that container is full, I drive it to the transfer station and I pay to dump it, by the ton, right there. A load of concrete or wet demolition debris can carry a disposal bill by itself that is bigger than some of these cheap ads' entire price. That is exactly why our number includes a real weight allowance and the disposal trip, so you are not shocked at the end. When a price looks too low, the disposal is almost always the piece that got left out.
Michael V.Head of Operations
We like to use private property as much as possible; street permits vary city by city. When you call in, I will get you exactly what you need. The mistakes we see all the time are ordering the wrong size and not ordering enough weight. People want the cheapest up-front price, but the issue with that is you get what you pay for. It's best to discuss what you're using the dumpster for so we can price accurately, not set you up for failure with extra dump fees later.
Judi K.Site Services Specialist
For our commercial and repeat accounts, the reason they stay is that our one flat number is honest, so they can bid their own jobs with confidence. A contractor cannot run a business on a surprise invoice. The cheap headline that adds delivery, disposal, and overage later is worthless to a professional, because it wrecks the budget on the job. One all-inclusive price, no hidden fees, is not just customer-friendly, it is the only version a serious operator can actually plan around. Honest pricing is a feature, not a weakness.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

How much does a dumpster rental cost in Virginia, and do I need a permit?

Virginia has three price markets with Ultimate Dumpsters: in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Northern Virginia, Charlottesville and Staunton a 10 yard runs $425 to $625 and a 20 yard $575 to $775; Winchester starts at $495; Roanoke and Blacksburg start at $550. Every price covers delivery, pickup, disposal, taxes and 7 days. A dumpster on your own driveway usually needs no permit, but Chesapeake limits a residential driveway box to 16 days. A box in the street needs the city's right of way permit, or a VDOT land use permit on state roads.

Full ladder for most of the state: a 12 yard runs $460 to $660, a 15 yard $495 to $695, a 30 yard $695 to $895 and a 40 yard $795 to $995. Each size includes about 1 to 4 tons, weight over the allowance is $170 a ton from the scale ticket, and extra days are $40 per day. Chesapeake lists a dumpster in the right of way at $50; Norfolk allows a street spot only when private property won't work, with 48 hours notice; Arlington and Alexandria want permits filed 5 business days ahead; Roanoke wants the dumpster company to file 10 days ahead with $1 million in insurance. Car batteries and whole tires never go in a dumpster. The fastest way to a real number is to price your exact ZIP online, or start from the Virginia coverage hub and pick your city.

This edition covers Virginia, chosen by Dylan, an uncovered state where Google Search Console shows Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Staunton dumpster searches with no clicks yet in the last 28 days (September 23 to October 18, 2026). It is written to push crawl authority and buyer intent into the existing live Virginia city pages, not to compete with them; Richmond and Newport News are left unlinked because they are part of a separate page test. Every price, the three price markets, the $170 per ton overage and the $40 per day extension are taken from the all inclusive ranges published on the live dumpsterrentals.us Virginia city pages on October 21, 2026. The Virginia Beach right of way permit, the Chesapeake portable storage container rule and right of way fee, the Norfolk general use permit and notice rule, the Arlington and Alexandria permit rules, the Fairfax and VDOT right of way guidance, the Roanoke dumpster permit, the Virginia lead-acid battery law, the tire and construction and debris landfill rules, and the DOLI asbestos and demolition notice rules are from those agencies' published pages and the Code of Virginia. Portable toilet prices are from the live Virginia portable toilet page. The external weather reference is the National Weather Service office in Wakefield. Team voices are from Ultimate Dumpsters staff. No invented statistics and no proprietary order counts. Published weekday mornings by Ultimate Dumpsters. Vol. I · No. 71.
